Research Study

Best practices of the CNU- CTE III BSED English students with high English Oral Proficiency

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to identify the best practices used by the selected CNU- CTE students with high English oral proficiency and aims to determine how they acquired such skill, difficulties and strategies used to address such difficulty, and pieces of advice they could share to the neophytes. This used a case study design. The researchers sought help from the selected ESOL faculty for the top 29 students with the aforementioned proficiency. Participants were given the personal data sheet to fill up and followed with a face to face interview with an audio recorder. After summarizing and analysing the results gathered, the researchers found out that the participants had different reasons in acquiring the skill and had different ways to overcome the difficulties. They also gave varied advice that would help others overcome the weakness.

ANALYSIS

English oral proficiency is best acquired most effectively when it is used as a vehicle in accomplishing something. This is the answer which most of the participants have in common when we ask them as to how they acquired such skill. From the gathered result of the researchers, it is reflected on table II that most of the participants answer is anchored on the different theories stated on theoretical background. In Thorndike’s law of exercise theory for example, it has been proven that by constant practice, reading a lot, joining English related contest, watching movies, imitating good speakers and continuous usage of the language, one acquires good oral skill. Based from the result, we can also infer that through peer pressure, parents support, kind of environment a person has, the availability of the resources and financial status also contributes an impact to the skill a person may acquire. This proves Vygotsky’s  “Socio-cultural theory” which states that social interaction plays a fundamental role in the development of condition. In this study, John Dewey’s “Learning by doing” theory is also proven through the participants answer in which by way of engaging an individual to the actual field and by applying English as a means of communication in different areas, they acquire good oral communication skill. The participants also suggest that in order for other people to acquire the aforementioned skill, they must believe in themselves, be confident enough, study, watch English movies, read, and most of all practice, practice and practice.
